Principal's Welcome
I am very proud to be the Principal of Roydvale School. Roydvale is a very friendly and positive school where there are high expectations for learning and behaviour. The 300 children who attend Roydvale are considerate and supportive of each other and are fortunate to be offered a wealth of opportunities to spark their interests, feed their enthusiasm and extend their creativity. Whether it is programmes offered as part of the curriculum or extra-curricula activities, the range offered goes towards creating well-rounded individuals with a richness of experience.
Roydvale School has a 'feel good' factor about it. Many people comment on this when they first visit the school, whether they be prospective families looking to enrol their children, visitors from other schools, or friends of families already associated with the school.
While all of New Zealand's curriculum areas are taught, the emphasis of teaching and learning programmes is on Maths and English in order to build a solid foundation for future learning. The students of Roydvale School however have the opportunity to gain much more than a basic education due to the high quality of the teaching and support staff who work together to provide a breadth of educational experiences in a friendly and caring school community.
A music specialist ensures every class receives weekly music lessons of the highest quality. A choir operates in the school and the children who form this, take part in the North West Music Festival or the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival. In addition to this, tuition in clarinet, violin, guitar, keyboard and drums is available on site.
A variety of sports are offered at Roydvale. The popularity of basketball continues to flourish as a result of the success of our teams in the North West Competitions. Year 5 and 6 students in summer are able to take part in the Christchurch Milo Trophy Cricket Competition while in winter they have the opportunity to participate in hockey, football, netball or rugby teams in the Christchurch Primary Schools Friday Sport Competitions at Hagley Park or in two new sporting options of golf at the Russley Golf Club or mountain biking at Bottle Lake Forest.
Opportunities for success also exist with Chess, French and Robotics clubs operating outside of classroom time allowing children to extend their existing skills or develop new ones.
The Board of Trustees governs the school in a very professional manner. This small group of people do a lot of work behind the scenes ensuring that the school is run according to legislation and that the children benefit as a result. The staff appreciates the support they receive from the Board and the positive working environment that exists.
The school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) does an amazing job of organizing a variety of events in the school. Their community events are fun and as a result of their fund-raising activities the children have benefited from new library books, sports uniforms, first aid kits, picnic tables and shade sails, recycling bins, court markings and sandpit toys.
You are most welcome to come and visit Roydvale and get a feel for the school yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to know more about Roydvale or make an appointment so that I can show you around this special place.
